DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE
The Department of Political Science was established in the year 2008, under the Faculty of Humanities with Dr. K S Pavithran, Professor of Political Science, K. M. Centre of West Asian Studies and Indian Ocean Studies as the Coordinator and later he was appointed as the Head of the Department. The P G Programme (CCSS) in Political Science was introduced in 2008, MPhil in 2011 and PhD in 2012. The Department is established as a Centre of Excellence in Political Studies through teaching, learning and research . The major areas of teaching and research in the Department include Political Theory, State and Political Process in India, Human Rights, Public Administration and Public Policy and International Relations.
The teaching and research within the Department have been designed in a way that encourages students to explore the interrelationships between ideas, events, institutions and policymaking. The academic programmes incorporated a strong interdisciplinary emphasis in the structure and design of its syllabi and focus on the most significant theoretical and empirical studies in Social Sciences. Initiatives and programmes of the Department are designed to achieve this through multiple pedagogical techniques aimed to transform learning into a pleasurable rewarding exercise. The department has state-of-the-art infrastructure as well as a well-organised library with rich resources in Political Science and other Social Science disciplines, a Computer lab for students, Seminar Hall, and WiFi- Internet facilities accessible to all students.
Many students who have done masters in the department have successfully cleared UGC-NET/JRF and joined the teaching profession and also entered the Indian Civil service. The faculty members and research scholars in the department have published books/ scholarly articles and edited volumes on various themes on/ related to Political Science and allied areas. The department hosted a number of academic events such as conferences and research activities. The department organises seminars, conferences and lecture series on various political issues on a regular basis in association with UGC, ICSSR and KSHEC. The distinguished foreign Policy lecture series supported by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India is a major initiative of the department.. The department also host erudite lectures by eminent personalities from Different parts of the world
As a part of its future expansion plans, the department is in the process of preparing proposals for the Center for Parliamentary Studies and the Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy. The department also plans to offer some short-term courses on Human Rights with special focus on indigenous people’s rights and public policy and governance as part of its outreach programme. The department has initiated steps to make the best use of available quality human resources to strengthen its academic activities, especially teaching and research.
Currently, the department is headed by Dr Sabu Thomas, Professor of Political Science.
